LyricTribe respects the intellectual property of others and expects users to do the same. This DMCA Policy describes how rightful copyright holders can request removal of infringing content, and how users can respond to such requests.

One-line summary: if you own a copyright and we're hosting your work without permission, send us a complete notice and we'll remove or credit it within 24-72 hours. Don't send false notices — perjury laws apply.

Our commitment

LyricTribe publishes song lyrics for the limited purposes of education, reference, criticism, and commentary under the doctrine of fair use. We do not host audio recordings or downloadable music files. Where a rightful copyright holder requests removal, modified attribution, or any other reasonable remedy, we respond promptly — typically within 24 hours acknowledgement and 72 hours action.

We operate under the safe-harbour provisions of the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA") of 1998 and Section 79 of India's Information Technology Act 2000 (as amended), which limits the liability of online service providers for user-generated content provided we follow proper notice-and-takedown procedures.

How to file a DMCA notice

If you believe content on the Site infringes your copyright, send a written notice to dmca@lyricstribe.com. To comply with 17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3), your notice must include all of the following:

  1. Your physical or electronic signature as the copyright owner or as a person authorised to act on their behalf.
  2. Identification of the copyrighted work you claim has been infringed (title, ISRC code if applicable, link to authoritative source).
  3. Identification of the infringing material on the Site — the full URL of the specific page(s), not just the home page. We can't act on vague claims.
  4. Your contact information — full name, postal address, telephone number, and email address.
  5. A good-faith statement that the disputed use is not authorised by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
  6. A statement under penalty of perjury that the information in your notice is accurate, and that you are the copyright owner or authorised to act on their behalf.

Incomplete notices will be returned for the missing information; we cannot process them until all six elements are present.

Designated DMCA agent

Email is the fastest and our preferred method. Notices may also be mailed to:

What happens after we receive your notice

After we receive a complete, good-faith notice:

  • We acknowledge receipt within 24 hours.
  • We remove or disable access to the allegedly infringing content within 72 hours, in most cases sooner.
  • We notify the user who posted the content (if applicable) so they may submit a counter-notification.
  • We keep a record of the notice for our repeat-infringer tracking (see below).

If the alleged infringement is editorial content authored by our team (not user-submitted), we may instead choose to update the attribution or rewrite the content rather than remove it, depending on the nature of your claim.

Counter-notification

If you believe your content was removed in error — for example, the removal was based on a mistake or misidentification — you may submit a counter-notification under 17 U.S.C. § 512(g). A valid counter-notification must include:

  1. Your physical or electronic signature.
  2. Identification of the material that was removed and the URL where it appeared before removal.
  3. A statement under penalty of perjury that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed as a result of mistake or misidentification.
  4. Your name, postal address, and telephone number.
  5. A statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the courts located in the judicial district of your address (or, if your address is outside the United States, the Southern District of New York), and that you will accept service of process from the original complainant.

Send counter-notifications to dmca@lyricstribe.com. Upon receipt of a valid counter-notification we will forward it to the original complainant. If they do not file a court action within 10-14 business days, we may restore the removed content.

Repeat-infringer policy

LyricTribe has a strict repeat-infringer policy. Users who are the subject of repeated valid DMCA notices may have their accounts suspended or terminated. We track notices internally for this purpose.

Knowingly false notices

Filing a knowingly false DMCA notice is a serious matter. Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f), any person who knowingly materially misrepresents that material is infringing — or that material was removed by mistake — may be liable for damages, including costs and attorney's fees, incurred by us and by the alleged infringer or copyright owner who was injured by the misrepresentation.

Indian law contains analogous provisions under Section 79 of the IT Act 2000 and the related Intermediary Rules 2021, including consequences for frivolous or malicious takedown requests.

Lyrics & fair use

LyricTribe presents lyrics for the limited purposes of education, reference, criticism, and commentary. We do not claim ownership of any song's lyrics or composition. Our editorial wrapping around lyrics — meaning notes, behind-the-song writing, FAQs, bios — is original LyricTribe writing and protected by our own copyright.

If you'd prefer your lyrics to be presented differently — for example, with a specific attribution, a link to your official source, or a smaller excerpt — we're usually happy to accommodate. Email dmca@lyricstribe.com or editor@lyricstribe.com and we'll work with you.
