This Privacy Policy describes how LyricTribe ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and protects information when you visit lyricstribe.com (the "Site"). We've written it in plain English wherever possible. If anything still feels unclear, email privacy@lyricstribe.com and we'll explain it.

One-line summary: we run a free lyrics reading site supported by display advertising. We collect the minimum needed to keep the Site working, measure traffic, serve ads, and respond to your messages. We do not sell your personal information.

Information we collect

Information you give us directly

You share information with us in these specific moments:

  • Comments on lyric or article pages — your display name, your email address (not published publicly), and the text you write.
  • Newsletter subscriptions — your email address.
  • Contact forms and lyric submissions — anything you type into the form, including your name, email address, and the body of your message.
  • Account information — if you sign in as a contributor or editor, your name and email; passwords for any administrative account are stored hashed (never in plain text).

Information collected automatically

When you load any page on the Site, your browser sends technical information that we record in standard server logs and analytics:

  • IP address (used for spam protection and approximate country / region for analytics)
  • Browser type and version
  • Operating system and device type (desktop, mobile, tablet)
  • The pages you visit, the order in which you visit them, and roughly how long you spend on each
  • The website or search query that referred you to us
  • Standard server log fields (timestamps, request URL, response code)

Information from cookies and similar technologies

We use cookies, HTML5 local storage, and pixel tags. The full list of categories is in the Cookies and Tracking Technologies section below, and also in our standalone Cookie Policy.

How we use your information

We use the information described above for the following specific purposes:

  • To operate, maintain, and improve the Site and the user experience
  • To display the lyrics, articles, and pages you request
  • To respond to comments, lyric submissions, contact messages, and other communications
  • To send our newsletter — only if you've explicitly opted in
  • To measure site traffic, popular content, and engagement patterns at an aggregate level
  • To serve relevant display advertisements through Google AdSense and approved third-party networks
  • To detect, prevent, and respond to spam, abuse, fraud, and security incidents
  • To comply with our legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Use

Cookies and tracking technologies

Cookies are small text files stored on your device by your browser. We group the cookies on this Site into four categories:

Essential cookies

Required for the Site to function correctly — session cookies, CSRF tokens, and your comment-author preferences. These cannot be switched off without breaking core functionality.

Analytics cookies

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages perform well, which devices visitors use, and roughly where in the world our readers are based. Google Analytics processes this data on our behalf using anonymised identifiers. You can read Google's Privacy Policy, or use the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on to disable tracking globally.

Advertising cookies — Google AdSense & DART

This Site is supported by advertising. We use Google AdSense to display ads. Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies — including the DoubleClick DART cookie — to serve ads to you based on your prior visits to this Site and other sites on the internet. You have the following choices:

  • Opt out of personalised advertising at Google's Ads Settings.
  • Opt out of third-party advertising cookies more broadly at aboutads.info/choices (US) or youronlinechoices.com (EU / UK).
  • Third-party vendors and ad networks that Google partners with may also serve ads on this Site. Their use of advertising cookies is governed by their own privacy policies.

Embedded content cookies

Some pages embed YouTube videos. We use a "click-to-play facade" pattern, which means YouTube's tracking cookies and scripts do not load until you actively press the play button on a video. Once you press play, YouTube and Google may set additional cookies on your device under their own privacy policy.

Third-party services we rely on

We use the following third-party services to operate the Site. Each has its own privacy policy that governs how it handles your data:

How we share information

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties. We share information only in these specific situations:

  • With service providers who help us operate the Site — hosting, analytics, ad serving, email delivery — and only the minimum data they need to perform their function.
  • For legal reasons, if we receive a valid legal process, court order, or government request, or if disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of LyricTribe, our users, or the public.
  • In aggregated or de-identified form — for example, "Hindi lyrics generate roughly 40% of our weekly traffic" — which cannot reasonably identify any individual.
  • In the event of a corporate transaction (acquisition, merger, sale of all or substantially all of our assets), user data may transfer to the new owner. We will notify you in advance via a banner on the Site.

Data retention

We keep information only as long as we need it for the purposes described above:

  • Comments: retained until you ask us to delete them.
  • Newsletter subscriber emails: retained until you unsubscribe (one click in any newsletter).
  • Contact form submissions: retained for up to 24 months for reference and audit.
  • Server access logs: rotated every 30 days.
  • Google Analytics data: retained at Google's default of 14 months for user / event data.

Your rights

Different regions grant readers different rights over their personal data. As a matter of policy we honour all of them globally, regardless of where you live.

Universal rights we honour

  • Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Deletion — request we delete your personal data.
  • Correction — request we correct inaccurate personal data.
  • Opt-out of marketing — unsubscribe from the newsletter using the link at the bottom of every email.
  • Withdraw consent — for any processing based on your consent (such as cookies).

Region-specific rights

  • EU & UK (GDPR / UK-GDPR): right to data portability, right to object to processing, right to lodge a complaint with your local Data Protection Authority.
  • California, USA (CCPA / CPRA): right to know, right to delete, right to correct, right to opt-out of "sale" or "sharing" of personal information (we do not sell, but you may still exercise this right), and right to non-discrimination.
  • India (DPDP Act 2023): right to access, correct, erase, nominate a representative, and grievance redressal.

To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@lyricstribe.com from the email address on file. We respond within 30 days.

Children's privacy

LyricTribe is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in the EU). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please email privacy@lyricstribe.com and we will delete it promptly.

Data security

We use industry-standard security measures to protect your information:

  • HTTPS / TLS encryption across the entire Site
  • Passwords stored using bcrypt hashing — never in plain text
  • Database access restricted by network controls and credentials
  • Regular software, framework, and dependency updates
  • Server-side input sanitisation on every form

No system on the internet is 100% secure. If we ever experience a data breach affecting your personal information, we will notify you within 72 hours as required by GDPR and most other applicable laws.

International data transfers

We are based in India. If you access the Site from outside India, your information may be transferred to and processed in India, the United States (where some of our analytics and advertising partners operate), or wherever our service providers are located. These cross-border transfers are protected by appropriate legal safeguards (for example, EU Standard Contractual Clauses where required by GDPR).

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of the page reflects the most recent revision. Material changes — anything that meaningfully affects how we collect or use your data — will be announced via a banner on the Site for at least 14 days before they take effect. Continued use of the Site after a change means you accept the updated policy.
