Who is Jubin Nautiyal?
Jubin Nautiyal is one of the most popular Indian playback singers of his generation, known for a warm, emotive voice that has powered a long run of Bollywood romantic hits — from "Raataan Lambiyan" and "Tum Hi Aana" to "Lut Gaye" and the heartbreak ballad "Barbaad" from Saiyaara (2025). With a foundation in Indian classical music and a gift for tender, melody-driven songs, he has become a go-to voice for love songs and emotional anthems across Hindi cinema.
Early life and education
Jubin Nautiyal was born on 14 June 1989 in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. His father, Ram Sharan Nautiyal, is a politician and businessman, and his mother, Neena Nautiyal, is a businesswoman. He was drawn to music from early childhood, reportedly beginning to sing at the age of four, encouraged by a household where music was cherished. He studied at St. Joseph's Academy and Welham Boys' School in Dehradun, where he took music seriously as a subject and learned several instruments, including the guitar, piano, harmonium and drums.
Musical training
To deepen his command of Indian classical music, Nautiyal trained under the celebrated Banaras gharana vocalist Pandit Chhannulal Mishra in Varanasi — a grounding in raga and classical technique that still underpins the control and ornamentation in his film singing. By his late teens he had already built a reputation as a gifted young singer in Dehradun before moving to Mumbai to pursue playback singing professionally.
Career breakthrough
Nautiyal made his playback debut in 2014 with "Ek Mulaqat" from the film Sonali Cable. He steadily built a catalogue across major films, and his breakout came with a string of romantic hits that showcased his soft, expressive delivery. Songs such as "The Humma Song" from OK Jaanu, "Tujhe Kitna Chahein Aur" from Kabir Singh, and "Tum Hi Aana" from Marjaavaan turned him into one of Bollywood's most bankable voices for love and longing.
Major hits and achievements
Some of his most celebrated songs include "Raataan Lambiyan" from Shershaah, the chart-topping "Lut Gaye" featuring Emraan Hashmi, "Tum Hi Aana", "Tujhe Kitna Chahein Aur" and "The Humma Song". "Raataan Lambiyan" in particular became a cultural phenomenon and won him the IIFA Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 2022, alongside a Filmfare nomination in the same category. Earlier, he had been recognised as "Upcoming Male Vocalist of the Year" at the Mirchi Music Awards in 2015.
A prolific and versatile output
Beyond his original film hits, Nautiyal has become one of Bollywood's most prolific singers, with a catalogue that spans romantic singles, film songs, devotional tracks and a notable run of recreated and reprised versions of older melodies. He is a fixture of music labels' single releases and a sought-after live performer, and several of his songs have crossed hundreds of millions of streams and views — a reflection of how reliably his voice connects with mainstream listeners. His willingness to move between intimate ballads, dance-pop and bhajans has kept him in near-constant demand across the industry.
Style and recent work
Nautiyal's appeal lies in his ability to carry the full emotional weight of a song with restraint — a classically trained voice that leans into melody rather than vocal acrobatics. He tends to serve the song rather than show off, a quality that suits the long-line, feeling-first melodies favoured by Bollywood's romantic composers. That sensibility made him a natural fit for "Barbaad", the devastating heartbreak ballad from Mohit Suri's Saiyaara (2025), composed by The Rish. The nearly six-minute song, built around the slow unravelling of a love that meets an impossible obstacle, gave Nautiyal one of the standout vocal showcases of his career and reaffirmed his standing as a first-call voice for the modern Hindi heartbreak song.
Legacy
From a music-loving childhood in Dehradun to the top tier of Bollywood playback singing, Jubin Nautiyal has become synonymous with the modern Hindi love song. His blend of classical training, emotional honesty and an instantly recognisable timbre has made him a defining voice of 2010s and 2020s Bollywood romance — and a singer whose songs reliably top streaming charts on release. More than a decade after his debut, he remains one of the busiest and most-streamed playback singers in the country, equally trusted with a delicate film ballad, a festival-season dance track or a devotional number, and a regular presence on both soundtracks and standalone singles.
